Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses. People suffering from it experience disturbances in their food intake, leading to related thoughts and emotions. According to the American Psychiatric Association, "Eating disorders affect several million people at one time, mostly women between the ages of 12 and 35." This type of person is often obsessed with food and body weight.

Somewhere you must also have met or seen people who are always overly critical of their body image. They find it difficult to accept themselves for who they are.

Eating Disorders

These people wouldn't even know, but maybe they suffer from eating disorders. People with this complex disorder also have fears of "gaining weight" and starve themselves to death. Eating disorders are classified into three main diseases: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. So this is a disease, not a choice.

You should know that there are many reasons for the development of this serious disorder. If you or one of your loved ones suffer from the disorder, you should be aware of the above reasons:

I. Influence of cultureThis is one of the main factors responsible for shaping our attitude towards body image. Over the years we've been raised to see the lean body (for women) and the muscular body (for men) as the perfect body shape. There are very few people who know that the body shape of men and women can take many forms.

The emphasis on looks has always been present in our society. Because of this, many people feel overwhelmed or obsessed with weight and see themselves as "overweight". They will use rapid weight loss programs instead of controlling their weight in a healthy way. Somehow they will also start starving themselves for no good reason.

II.Under geneticsGenetics contribute to the development of our bodies. According to studies, it has been found that the disease eating disorders mostly occurs in a person when it runs in the family. Consequently, it has higher rates in identical twins than any other sibling.

III. psychological factorsStudies show that in most cases, other disorders such as clinical depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or alcohol abuse may contribute to eating disorders.People dealing with anxiety or fear generally have low self-esteem, perfectionism, and problems overcoming/expressing emotions. They also experience restlessness in situations.

IV. EnvironmentThe complexity of this disorder can also arise from changes in the environment. People may have had bad experiences in the past, causing them to create boundaries around themselves.Under pressure, activities related to eating disorders increase. Some factors could also be:Difficult childhoodpeer/social pressureFamily/other relationship problemsPrevious physical/sexual abusehave been bullied because of their body image

V. In a state of stressStress leads to significant health problems. It affects both physically and mentally. People with eating disorders can experience abnormalities in the chemical reactions happening in their bodies, often leading to mood swings and stress.
